Artificial intelligence is changing assistive technology at a speed few predicted. Mainstream tools such as real-time captions, computer vision apps and smart home systems are now supporting disabled people in everyday life — often without being designed as specialist products. Research from sources including the National Institutes of Health and Frontiers in Digital Health shows measurable gains in mobility, communication and daily living. Yet affordability, abandonment rates, bias and weak co-design still block access. AI may be powerful, but independence depends on who builds it, who can afford it and whether disabled people are involved from the start.

Traditional assistive products were built to do one job. A screen magnifier magnified. A hearing loop transmitted sound. Useful, yes — but fixed. If your environment changed or your access needs shifted, the tool did not adapt with you.

Artificial intelligence changes that architecture. Systems can adjust to speech patterns, lighting conditions or individual preferences over time. A 2025 review in Healthcare, available through the National Institutes of Health, analysed 19 review studies and found AI is moving assistive technology from passive tools to responsive systems embedded in daily life. The same paper notes that most research in this field has been published within the past five years.

Vision and Blindness: Instant Interpretation

Computer vision has shifted quickly from laboratory concept to everyday support. The AI update to Be My Eyes allows blind users to receive instant descriptions of text, objects and surroundings without waiting for a volunteer. Microsoft Seeing AI offers similar real-time audio description through a smartphone. Wearables such as OrCam and Envision Glasses place object recognition directly into a user's field of view.

We have seen this shift first-hand in our own work. When producing content, one of our team members hit a barrier with writing alt text. He understood why image descriptions mattered for blind users, but he did not know how to structure them clearly. The blank page became the obstacle.

So we built our own AI tool — an Alt Text Creator designed specifically with blind and visually impaired users in mind. It prompts structured, best-practice descriptions that prioritise meaning, context and relevance rather than simply listing visible objects.

That small change removed hesitation. AI did not replace human judgment. It provided a starting framework that reduced friction and improved confidence across the team.

This is where AI works well — as quiet access infrastructure rather than spectacle.

These tools are not flawless. Complex lighting, unusual objects and unstable internet connections still cause problems. Advanced braille displays remain extremely expensive, placing them out of reach for many users. Progress is visible, but access is uneven.

Real-Time Captions and Hearing Access

Automatic captioning has become part of daily infrastructure. Google Live Transcribe, live captions in Microsoft Teams and improved auto-captions on YouTube allow Deaf and hard of hearing people to participate in conversations that would once have required specialist booking.

Accuracy still drops with regional accents, speech differences and background noise. That gap matters. The people who benefit most from captioning are often those least well served by current models.

Communication and AAC

Augmentative and alternative communication devices are also changing. AI-driven systems can predict vocabulary based on a user's previous language patterns, reducing the effort required to construct sentences. The impact extends beyond the device itself: non-verbal users are engaging on social media, navigating public services and joining communities that were previously closed to them. Reddit forums and disability communities on social platforms have become powerful feedback loops, with users driving product development and holding companies accountable in real time. Research highlighted by New America stresses that meaningful inclusion in digital spaces depends on disabled people shaping these systems.

AI is also shifting administrative independence.

We created a dedicated Attendance Allowance claim form writer after supporting a relative through the process. The form was long, repetitive and difficult to structure in a way that reflected daily reality. We later used similar structured AI support for Personal Independence Payment forms within our own family.

These systems do not fabricate information. They help organise lived experience into clear, evidence-based language. For many disabled people, the barrier is not eligibility — it is translating daily barriers into rigid bureaucratic formats.

When AI helps structure real-life experience into clear responses, it reduces reliance on external intermediaries.

When communication tools work well, the effect is practical and immediate: posting online independently, contacting services without mediation, joining conversations in real time.

Mobility, Robotics and Smart Environments

Machine learning is being integrated into prosthetics and powered wheelchairs so that movement adapts to terrain and user behaviour. Research institutions such as the Human Engineering Research Laboratories continue to test AI-supported mobility systems in real-world settings.

At home, voice-controlled ecosystems such as Amazon Echo and Apple HomeKit function as quiet access infrastructure. Adjusting lighting, heating or door locks through speech can remove barriers created by physical layouts that were never designed with disabled residents in mind.

Our wheelchair accessories follow the same principle — reducing friction in ordinary environments.

The Evidence — and the Cost

Evidence of impact is building. A 2025 study in Nature Scientific Reports examining AI-based tools for children with Down syndrome reported moderate to large improvements in communication and daily living skills. The same study found that 75% of potential users cited financial barriers as the main obstacle to access.

The funding picture is broader than that single figure suggests. Research in Frontiers in Digital Health found that approximately 40% of assistive technology users across all disabilities fund their devices out of pocket — the single largest source of AT funding. Most insurance reimbursement is constrained to tools that support in-home living, which means products that could support employment, education or community participation are routinely excluded.

High abandonment rates remain a further concern. Overall, around 29% of assistive technology is abandoned, with some categories of optical AT for blind and low-vision users seeing abandonment rates between 17% and 50%. The causes are consistent: poor design fit, inadequate training and follow-up, and tools that work in controlled settings but fail in real life. Corporate decisions make this worse. Microsoft discontinued Soundscape, a navigation tool with strong blind community support, while retaining Seeing AI. Toyota invested nearly $300 million in the BLAID project, a body-worn visual AT device, then cancelled it before release. These decisions do not just remove a product. They remove the confidence of communities that had built skills and routines around it.

Bias, Trust and Who Gets Included

AI systems reflect the data used to train them. Captioning tools may struggle with non-standard speech. Voice recognition can exclude people with speech impairments. The European Disability Forum has warned that artificial intelligence risks reinforcing discrimination if disabled people are involved only after launch.

Trust also depends on stability. If a tool disappears after a corporate strategy shift, users lose more than software. They lose routines built over months or years.

Why Co-Design Is Non-Negotiable

Disability-led design is not theoretical for us. It is practical.

Trabasack was invented because existing products did not meet Clare's needs after spinal injury. The same pattern continues today. When we saw gaps in alt text production and benefits form writing, we built tools shaped by real barriers.

Disabled people are not passive recipients of innovation. We are building it.

AI becomes genuinely useful when it starts from lived experience instead of retrofitting access after launch.

Products shaped through participatory design consistently show stronger uptake and longer-term use because they reflect real environments rather than idealised assumptions.

Practical Checklist: Before Choosing AI-Based Assistive Technology

AI tools can be powerful. They can also be expensive, unstable or poorly supported. Before committing time or money, consider the following:

  • Is this solving a real barrier I experience daily?
  • Is the tool stable and likely to remain available?
  • What happens if the company withdraws it?
  • Can I test it properly before paying?
  • Is training or follow-up support available?
  • Does it work with my existing equipment?
  • Was it shaped by disabled people?
  • Who is paying for this long term?

Independence depends on reliability. A tool that works consistently is more valuable than one that makes headlines.

Independence Is a Right

Artificial intelligence has introduced tools that would have sounded improbable a decade ago: instant scene description, live translation, predictive communication and adaptive mobility.

Access still depends on affordability, policy, design choices and long-term commitment. Technology can remove barriers, but only if those barriers are recognised in the first place. Disabled people are shaping these systems, testing them and demanding better.

The technology is moving quickly. The question is whether funding systems, corporate responsibility and inclusive design will keep pace.
